Four Failures Couldn't Break His Spirit: Himachal Police Inspector Cracks India's Toughest Exam on Fifth Attempt, Becomes Inspiration for Youth
No goal is truly impossible when backed by hard work, dedication, and an unshakeable will — Inspector Sanjeev Kumar of the Himachal Pradesh Police has proved exactly that. Against all odds, this serving police officer cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination, one of the most competitive and gruelling tests in the country, securing an All India Rank of 844.
Currently posted as an Investigation Officer with the Vigilance department in Nahan, Sanjeev Kumar's journey to success is not just a personal milestone — it is a story that resonates with every young aspirant who has ever faced failure and wondered whether to keep going.
Inspector Sanjeev Kumar's success story shows that perseverance and determination can turn years of struggle into an inspiring victory.
A Small-Town Boy With Big Dreams
Sanjeev Kumar, 30, hails from Nurpur tehsil in Kangra district. He comes from a modest family where resources were limited, but ambition and encouragement were never in short supply. His family stood by him through every challenge, continuously motivating him to pursue his studies and never lose sight of his goals.
In 2020, Sanjeev joined the Himachal Pradesh Police as a Sub-Inspector — a respectable achievement in itself, but not the destination he had in mind. Even as he took on the responsibilities of a law enforcement officer, the dream of clearing the civil services examination never left him.
He served in Una and Mandi before his current posting in Vigilance, Nahan.
From a modest background in Kangra district to serving in the Himachal Pradesh Police, Sanjeev Kumar carried his dream of civil services with him through every stage of his journey.
The Long Road to the UPSC
Sanjeev's preparation for competitive examinations began as far back as 2017-18. His first target was the Himachal Administrative Service (HAS) examination. Over several years, he cleared the HAS preliminary examination five times, appeared in the mains twice, and even made it to the interview stage once — only to fall short of the final selection each time.
For many, repeated failure at such a stage would have been devastating. For Sanjeev, it was fuel. He refused to give up, taking every setback as a lesson and pressing forward with renewed focus. His perseverance is a testament to the kind of quiet, relentless determination that rarely makes headlines — until the breakthrough finally arrives.
Repeated setbacks did not break Sanjeev Kumar's determination. Instead, each attempt strengthened his resolve to keep moving forward toward his dream of clearing the civil services examination.
Balancing Badge and Books
Clearing UPSC while serving as a police officer is no small feat. The job is demanding, unpredictable, and leaves little room for personal pursuits. But Sanjeev found a way.
His posting at the Vigilance department offered him a relatively structured routine, and he made the most of it. He studied early in the mornings and again in the evenings after duty hours. Weekends were reserved entirely for preparation. In 2024, he decided to dedicate himself to the UPSC with complete seriousness, doubling down on his efforts while continuing to fulfill his professional responsibilities.
Crucially, he did not do it alone. Senior officers and colleagues within the police department extended their support, giving him the space and encouragement he needed. "The cooperation I received from the department was invaluable," Sanjeev said.
Balancing a demanding police job with UPSC preparation required discipline, time management, and the support of colleagues who believed in Sanjeev Kumar's determination.
The Support System Behind the Success
Behind every individual achievement is a network of people who believe in the person before the world does. For Sanjeev, that network is his family.
His wife, Ritu Chaudhary, has been his constant companion through years of uncertainty, long study hours, and the emotional weight of repeated attempts. His two-and-a-half-year-old son Karmanya, he says, is his greatest source of motivation. His parents and brother Vikas Kumar have been pillars of support throughout.
Sanjeev has credited this success entirely to them. "Whatever I have achieved is because of my family, the blessings of my parents, the patience of my wife, and the support of my colleagues," he said.
Sanjeev Kumar attributes his UPSC success to the unwavering support of his family, whose encouragement helped him stay strong through years of preparation and repeated attempts.
More Than Just UPSC
Sanjeev's academic credentials extend well beyond the civil services result. He has previously cleared the UGC NET, SET, and JRF examinations, along with several other competitive tests. This diverse examination experience, he believes, played a significant role in preparing him for the demands of the UPSC.
Success in exams such as UGC NET, SET, and JRF reflects the strong academic foundation that helped Sanjeev Kumar navigate the challenging UPSC preparation journey.
A Message for Aspiring Youth
Sanjeev Kumar's story carries a simple but powerful message for the thousands of young people across Himachal Pradesh and the country who are chasing their dreams amid self-doubt and adversity.
"If your goal is clear and you keep working towards it consistently, success will come," he said. "It may take time. It may take more attempts than you planned. But as long as you don't quit, you haven't failed."
In a country where the UPSC is often treated as the ultimate measure of a certain kind of ambition, Sanjeev Kumar's fifth-attempt success is a reminder that the number of tries matters far less than the decision to never stop trying.
Sanjeev Kumar's journey proves that perseverance and belief in one's goal can eventually turn years of struggle into success.
