Chandigarh a New Destination For IAS Coaching
With the ever increasing craze of Civil services among youth, there has been a proliferation of preparation hot spots in and around the country. In yesteryear, whenever a person aspired for civil services, the first place he thought of was Delhi (Mecca of Civil service preparation). But in recent years the options on the table have increased manifold. Today we are going to take an emerging hot spot as far as civil services are concerned. Chandigarh, the City beautiful has always been a dream destination of every Indian. It has also developed itself as an educational hub with one of the best universities in India that is The Panjab University. Lately, the trend which we and our team has noticed and thoroughly researched is the growing prominence of Chandigarh for Civil services preparation. We took a survey on why such trends are being witnessed despite the vicinity of Delhi, and why students from North India prefer Chandigarh over Delhi for civil service preparation.
Our Survey was based on a questionnaire presented to 3500 students preparing for civil services and shortlisting 120 for interviews in Chandigarh, asking them the reason behind their choice and benefits they felt they had for choosing the city. We also asked them to compare their stay in the city from their friends staying in places like Delhi or Jaipur for civil service preparation. Here is the conclusion that we derived for it.
The standard of living: An astounding 92% of students highlighted “Living space” as the prime reason for their choice of Chandigarh. According to students, Chandigarh is far less crowded and has quality amenities like parks and playgrounds. The quality of Air is much better than other cities and there is the least scarcity of water. Moreover, the cost of living in Chandigarh is much cheaper than in other metropolitan cities. According to the survey, an average student living as paying guest in Chandigarh can manage in around 6000 rupees in a month, while the same cost of living in cities like Delhi is around 15000 rupees.
Access to Educational Tools: Again 78% of the students surveyed highlighted the access to public libraries as the prime reason for choosing Chandigarh. The city has around 10 main libraries and many reading centers. For instance State Central library at Sector 17 and sector 34, A.C Joshi Library of Panjab University (Asia’s largest library), etc. Moreover, the study Environment and access to competitive books is very good because of colleges in and around Chandigarh
The proximity of Education Hungry states: Proximity of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir makes Chandigarh an ideal place to be an Educational hub. All of these states have a huge population of Graduates looking for Job opportunities. So Demand had led to the establishment of many coaching Institutions. According to O2 IAS Academy, one of the reputed institutions for Civil services in Chandigarh, there is high demand for civil service preparation from states like Himachal and Jammu. They have been running various courses to cater to special needs of rural and semi-urban students.
Good Teaching Quality and Higher success rates in recent years: Being an Educational Hub, good teaching faculty has always been present in the city. But with increasing demand, exceptional Mentors have come to be known in the city. For instance, Praveen Bansal Sir from Abhimanyu’s IAS, Prof. K. S Sandhu from O2 IAS, etc. With the good mix of both the factors, there has been a good increase in success rates from the region. It is especially true in the case of State Civil services such as PCS and HPAS. For instance in Extensive deliberations with O2 IAS, they claim to have given 82 selections in past 2 years alone. Many academies are claiming similar figures. Whether true or not, one can see a visible change in the number of selected candidates from the past and now. Matter of fact recognizing the potential of the region, many renowned institutes have made inroads to Chandigarh.

Other aspects on which Chandigarh scored very good has been as follows:
85% of the students surveyed rate Chandigarh’s transport as very good (score = 89/100)
A whopping 94% consider Chandigarh to be a far safer city than any other metropolitan for students (score = 91/100)
79% consider the residents of Chandigarh as Friendly and cooperative. (score = 81/100)
So these were some of the takeaways from one of the kind survey undertaken by us. Despite plus points, we also found few shortcomings in Chandigarh and where places like Delhi stand out. For instance
68% students consider that availability of study material is still a big issue to deal in Chandigarh and Delhi stands out in this aspect. (score an average here i.e. 62/100)
Specialized coaching for instance Optionals like Physics, maths, Anthropology, pali etc. are unavailable in Chandigarh. (score = 57/100)
Quality test series is also considered an important issue to resolve in Chandigarh. (score = 68/100)
But Considering that Civil service Coaching is still at a budding phase, these issues will be resolved as coaching academies up ante their work to produce a competitive edge. But overall we can definitely say that Civil coaching in Chandigarh has a great future and it is going to be very beneficial to students in terms of good quality of living and better services from coaching centers.
For those students who are reading this and vacillating whether to go for Chandigarh or Delhi for coaching, we feel Chandigarh is a better option in a long run. Hope this survey report helped resolve your doubts.
