HPAS CSAT 2025 Analysis: Topics Asked and How to Clear the 33% Cutoff

HPAS CSAT 2025 PYQ Analysis: Important Topics, Difficulty Level and Question Trends
Many HPAS aspirants spend months on General Studies and leave CSAT for later. That is a risk. CSAT does not decide your rank, but it decides whether your General Studies paper gets checked at all. You need at least 33% in Paper 2 for your Paper 1 to be evaluated.
The good news is that the 2025 paper, held on 29 June 2025, was quite clearable. Nearly half the questions were easy, and many came in groups. Six questions came from one cube puzzle, ten from communication skills, and ten from English grammar and vocabulary.
This HPAS CSAT analysis explains what was asked, which topics give the easiest marks, and how to plan your Himachal PCS CSAT preparation.

HPAS CSAT Exam Pattern and Qualifying Marks
| Paper I (GS) | Paper II (CSAT) | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 100 | 100 |
| Marks | 200 | 200 |
| Time | 2 hours | 2 hours |
| Purpose | Decides your rank | Qualifying only |
Each paper has 100 questions and 200 marks. One-third of a question's marks are cut for each wrong answer. Check the latest notification on the official HPPSC website before the exam.
What this means for you
- Each question is worth 2 marks. A wrong answer costs about 0.67 marks.
- 33% of 200 is 66 marks, which is about 33 correct answers, but only if you get nothing wrong. With 5 wrong answers you need 35 correct, and with 10 wrong answers you need 37.
- You get about 72 seconds per question.
HPAS CSAT Topic-Wise Weightage: What the 2025 Paper Asked
How these numbers were prepared: The counts come from our question-by-question analysis of the 2025 HPAS CSAT paper. They are not an official HPPSC classification, and a question that fits two topics may be counted differently by different people. Cross-check them against the original paper before planning around them.
| Area | Questions | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Maths | 32 | 32% |
| Reasoning | 38 | 38% |
| English, comprehension and communication skills | 30 | 30% |
The paper is not split into neat sections. Maths questions appear again near Q66–67, and reasoning questions appear at Q68–70. Look through the whole paper before you start.

What to note from the topic-wise analysis
- Maths: geometry and mensuration (about 13 questions) had as many questions as arithmetic (about 13). Trigonometry had 4 and algebra 2. Many aspirants skip geometry because they think CSAT is only arithmetic. The 2025 paper shows that is a mistake, so revise your Class 9 and 10 geometry and trigonometry.
- Reasoning: the six cube questions all came from one idea. Learn the cube method once and you gain 12 marks.
- English and communication: the split was even, 10 questions each. The communication part is theory, and a few days of study can win you most of those 10 questions.
HPAS CSAT Difficulty Level
| Level | Share | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | about 48% | Direct formulas, simple analogies, basic syllogism, short passages, grammar rules |
| Medium | about 42% | Algebra, the cube puzzle, Venn diagrams, communication terms, polygons, heights and distances |
| Hard | about 10% | Centroid area ratios, trigonometry identities, polynomial identity, one letter-coding question |
These levels are our own assessment, not an official classification, so treat them as a rough guide. About 48 easy questions at 2 marks each is already close to 96 marks. You do not need the hard questions to qualify.
Easy Topics to Score in HPAS CSAT
| Topic | Questions |
|---|---|
| Communication skills | 10 |
| English vocabulary and grammar | 10 |
| Reading comprehension | 10 |
| Painted cube puzzle | 6 |
| Analogies, odd one out, coding | about 15 |
| Total | about 51 |
If you get 80% of these right, that is about 41 correct answers, well above the 33 you need. Arithmetic and geometry then become extra marks instead of your only hope.
How Many Questions to Attempt in HPAS CSAT
| Attempted | Correct | Wrong | Marks | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | 36 | 4 | about 69 | Clears the 66-mark cutoff |
| 45 | 38 | 7 | about 71 | Clears the 66-mark cutoff |
| 50 | 40 | 10 | about 73 | Clears the 66-mark cutoff |
| 55 | 40 | 15 | 70 | More attempts, fewer marks |
Aim for 45 to 50 questions with about 80% or more right. Attempting more only adds wrong answers.
Watch your accuracy at 45 attempts. If exactly 80% of 45 are right (36 correct, 9 wrong), you score 66, right on the cutoff. The table above uses 38 correct out of 45, which is about 84%. If your accuracy is lower, attempt closer to 50 only when you are confident, and keep guesses for questions where you have removed two options.
How to Prepare for HPAS CSAT: Topic-Wise Strategy
Communication skills
- Learn the main terms: semantics, semiotics, haptics, proxemics, communication models, barriers, feedback.
- Write one page of notes and read it every week.
- For leadership and time management questions, pick the answer that is fair, practical and sensible.
English
- Learn 10 new words a day and revise them every week.
- Practise one-word substitutions, synonyms and antonyms.
- Revise common grammar points: each other vs one another, double negatives, parallel sentences, similar-sounding words.
- Read one newspaper editorial a day. In passages, avoid options with words like "always" or "only", and options that bring in things the passage never said.
Reasoning
- Learn the standard question types first: painted cube, dice, seating, blood relations, ranking, directions.
- Learn the cube formulas once: cubes with one, two and three painted faces, and cubes with no paint.
- Practise calendar and clock questions with shortcuts.
- Leave figure-counting for the end.
Maths
- Arithmetic: percentages, profit and loss, compound interest, work, pipes, trains, speed and distance.
- Geometry: Class 9–10 NCERT. Triangles, circles, polygons, rhombus, kite, trapezium, and the volume formulas for cylinder, cone and pyramid.
- Trigonometry: basic ratios, standard identities, heights and distances.
- Algebra: the standard identities. Try only the ones that look doable.
HPAS CSAT Preparation Plan for Your Background
If you are good at maths (science, engineering, commerce)
- Attempt the geometry and trigonometry questions. You can aim for 50 to 55 attempts.
- Do not skip communication skills. It is easy to lose these marks by being careless.
- Practise English every day. A weak English score is where maths-strong candidates most often slip.
If maths is your weak area (arts, law, humanities)
- Start with the 51 easy-mark questions above. They need very little maths.
- In maths, aim for the easiest 12 to 15 questions: basic arithmetic, trains, ages, and simple geometry facts like the rhombus and trapezium. Skip the long geometry and trigonometry questions.
- Spend the first 2 to 3 weeks on arithmetic basics, then add basic geometry.
- You only need 33%. Many candidates get there mainly through reasoning and English.
Time Plan for the HPAS CSAT Exam (120 Minutes)
| Part | Time |
|---|---|
| Communication skills and English language (20 questions) | 15 min |
| Reading comprehension (10 questions) | 15 min |
| Reasoning, including the cube puzzle (38 questions) | 30 min |
| Arithmetic (about 13 questions) | 25 min |
| Easy geometry and trigonometry | 20 min |
| Check answers and make informed guesses | 10 min |
| Total | 115 min |
You keep 5 minutes as a buffer.
Rules for exam day
- Look through the whole paper first. Maths and reasoning questions are mixed in.
- Solve easy questions first and leave hard ones for later.
- Guess only after you have removed at least two options.
- If a question takes more than 2 minutes, move on.
- Stay calm between the two papers.
60-Day HPAS CSAT Preparation Plan

Study at least 90 minutes a day. If maths is weak, add 30 minutes a day for the first three weeks.
Mistakes to Avoid in HPAS CSAT Preparation
- Skipping communication skills because it looks easy.
- Ignoring geometry.
- Spending 5 minutes on one hard question.
- Attempting 60 or more questions just to feel productive.
